The NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series will begin the new season Feb. 7-10 with the 48th annual Winternationals in Pomona, and look for a familiar face to return to the cockpit.

John Force, after four months of intensive rehabilitation following the most serious crash of his professional career, will take to the quarter-mile drag strip in his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang. Force, drag racing's most prolific winner, showed his old form during a test in Phoenix recently, clocking a pass of 4.782 (327.51 mph). That run topped the speed charts ahead of Ron Capps, who held the previous best at 4.786.

Force will be joined by his daughter, Ashley Force, in Pomona, when the NHRA begins its highly-anticipated 2008 season. Defending national champions are Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel), Tony Pedregon (Funny Car), Jeg Coughlin (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle).

You can catch all the action from Pomona on ESPN2 at the following days and times (all times Pacific): Feb. 9, 5-8 p.m.; and Feb. 10 (final eliminations), 4:30-8 p.m. The NHRA returns to the Sonoma Valley for a 21st consecutive year for the FRAM Autolite NHRA Nationals, July 25-27. All three days were nearly sold out of reserved seats in 2007, so act today to secure the best seats in the house. Call 800-870-RACE or visit http://www.infineonraceway.com/.
