This marks the first-ever statewide NASCAR weekend proclamation in California, and comes in advance of the Dodge/Save Mart 350 in the Sonoma Valley, June 23-25. It will be NASCAR's 18th consecutive visit to Infineon Raceway.
Assemblyman LaMalfa (R-Richvale) has attended NASCAR events at Infineon Raceway in past years and believes the proclamation is long overdue as the popularity of NASCAR surges in the Golden State.
"This special day at our State Capitol will provide an opportunity for NASCAR fans and families from throughout the area to help us celebrate what has become the largest sporting event annually in Northern California," said LaMalfa.
The proclamation will take place mid-morning on the floor of the State Legislature and will be repeated on the West Steps of the State Capitol for race fans during a race festival.
"When the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup stars come to town, it's much more than just a local event," Page said. "We'll have fans here from all over California and the western United States. We appreciate Assemblyman LaMalfa's efforts and this special recognition by the State Legislature."
The festival will include several interactive elements for race fans designed to help kick-off the big NASCAR NEXTEL Cup weekend in the Sonoma Valley, including:
- The No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge show car.
- NEXTEL Cup trophy for photo opportunities.
- NEXTEL Racing Experience, an interactive display for race fans.
- Blue Lizard Australian Suncream cancer screening booth.
Race fans are encouraged to attend the festival and take part in all activities, including a special ticket offer for the Dodge/Save Mart 350 weekend. For more information, call 800-870-RACE or visit www.infineonraceway.com.
