Top the Cops and Wednesday Night Drag racing returned to the Sonoma Valley drag strip, May 7, at Infineon Raceway. The next Wednesday Night Drags event will take place on May 21.
In Top the Cops action, Deputy's Mike Shanahan, Mario Jimenez and AJ. Winter (Sonoma County Sherriff's Office) and Officer Robert Marin (Fairfield Police Department) led the law enforcement agencies to victory, winning four of six races over area high school students. Napa's Chris Arana and Petaluma's Brendan Clark prevented the shutout, each scoring wins in their respective races.
Returning to the Wednesday Night Drags Winner's Circle were San Rafael's Scott Sterley, who took top honors in the Street class followed by repeat winners in Novato's Joe Piazza (Comp Rod), Newark's Rick McIlmoil (Sport Street) and Santa Rosa's Tom Johnson (Jack Pot). Napa's Michael Byrne collected his first class win of the year in the High School class as did Petaluma's Ron Love, who came out on top in Motorcycle.
Wednesday Night Drags racing will return on May 21. Gates open at 3 p.m.; competition begins at 5 p.m. Cost is $25 for competitors, $15 for students with their high school identification card and $10 for spectators. For more information, call 800-870-RACE ext. 209.
